The average age of military aircraft has been estimated at about 30 years. Most of their avionic systems were developed based on a “federated” architecture. Functionality is partitioned among multiple subsystems, such as navigation, communications or radar, which are interconnected through a central command and control network (primarily MIL-STD-1553).
